Internet symbol www Everyone is well aware of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the opening day of Christmas and holiday shopping. The first use of the term “Black Friday” in conjunction with Thanksgiving comes from Philadelphia police officers referring to the heavy traffic as a result of the shopping madness. On Cyber Monday, traffic on the roads is not an issue.

Cyber Monday is the first Monday following Thanksgiving  and marks opening day for holiday e-commerce. The term was created by the National Retail Federation, which introduced CyberMonday.com, a portal for e-commerce deals. That was in 2005.

While critics contend that Cyber Monday is a gimmick deployed by marketers to ramp up retail business, others wonder if the term and the day will stick. So far, research indicates that cyber shopping as a whole is increasing although Cyber Monday is not necessarily the busiest day. If all the consumerism is getting to you, there’s a day for you too; it’s called Buy Nothing Day.
